Thank you for your interest in working in the NIU Anxiety Disorders Research Lab. Dr. Valentiner often has several undergraduate students working in the lab including undergraduate students taking PSYC 485, volunteering, working on an honors thesis, or participating in the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP).
Participating as an undergraduate research assistant in a lab in the psychology department can provide many opportunities. These opportunities include learning about research design; applying skills learned in research methods classes in a real-world setting; developing critical thinking skills and other research related skills such as collecting data, using SPSS, and writing research papers; and learning more about anxiety disorders. These skills are useful for personal development; however, they are also useful in building a resume for post-baccalaureate programs or gaining experience for graduate school applications. Students working in labs also have the opportunity to build a relationship with a faculty member and with other undergraduate students and graduate students working in the lab.
If you are an undergraduate thinking about working in Dr. Valentiner's lab, please make sure to read the FAQ for NIU Undergraduates section of this webpage. The FAQ section will cover Dr. Valentiner's research interests, how to make an appointment with Dr. Valentiner, and various other topics related to becoming a lab member. Please also explore the website for more information including the publications section to get a sense of whether our lab can provide you with the research opportunities that you are looking for.
Please note: Undergraduate Research positions in the Anxiety Disorders Research Lab are not guaranteed. A variety of factors are considered in determining whether an opportuity to work in the lab would be available for a student including availablility of positions, the student's application, and whether the lab can provide the student with what the student needs/desires.
